2008 Players Championship results
Spaniard Sergio Garcia put memories of the 2007 Players Championship behind him yesterday as he claimed a memorable victory in one of the PGA Tour’s biggest events.
Garcia won the title by beating American Paul Goydos at the first extra hole of the 2008 Players Championship. Garcia’s win marked only the second occasion that a European has walked away with the Players Championship title, with Scotland’s Sandy Lyle last achieving this feat in 1987.
The finale of the tournament provided high drama as Garcia barely managed to hold onto his tournament score of 71 over the last two holes of regulation play, almost losing the tournament on a windy 18th green.
However Garcia held on for a tie with Goydos, forcing a playoff. Goydos buried his championship prospects off his tee shot when his ball found its way into a water hazard. Garcia played his tee shot perfectly to put the ball within 4 feet of the hole. An unlikely shot for par by Goydos failed, leaving Garcia with the simplest of shots to win the Players Championship.
The PGA Tour now heads to the AT&T Classic as the build-up to the 2008 US Open continues.
