The Players Championship: Odds
As The Players Championship is the richest event of the PGA Tour it can be expected to draw a field of the top 50 golfers on the Official World Golf Ranking. Traditionally the competition has been contested with fierce rivalry, and nothing will get the boys going more than a million dollars or more in the pocket!
There are several players who can claim the Players Championship in 2009, but it is important to bear in mind that the vast majority of winners in the past have hailed from the United States, but this is not always the case as the 2009 Players Championship winner was Sergio Garcia from Spain.
Hot Picks
- Former world number one and resident of Ponte Vedra Beach, Vijay Singh has to be in contention for his maiden victory at The Players Championship. The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is in all probability his home turf, so with the added advantage of playing the course regularly, he will surely give the rest of the field a run for their money. He is still up there in the top twenty of the Official World Golf Ranking, and he had a reasonable 2008 season. He won 3 PGA Tour events, the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, The Barclays Classic and the Deutche Bank Championship.
- Spain’s Sergio Garcia is the current defending championship has to be close to pulling off another big win – the man simply has too much raw talent. The 2008 season was great season for Garcia who struggled in 2007 when he was runner-up to Phil Mickelson at The Players Championship, and lost out to Padraig Harrington in a playoff at Carnoustie, missing his first grand slam and the coveted British Open by a single stroke.
- Australian Adam Scott is currently languishing in the top five of the Official World Golf Ranking, and looks good to claim his second win at Sawgrass. He was champion in 2004 and tied 6th last year. His 2008 season started in great form - he won the Qatar Masters in brilliant style, breaking the course record by 2 shots. He pulled off an incredible 6 birdies in the front nine and then ended the day with another five birdies on the back.
- Then, of course there is the Tiger! The undisputed World number one, Tiger Woods has a career record which is just plain astounding for a man of his age. He has already claimed thirteen majors and 62 PGA Tour wins, and he is only 33 years of age. His comeback from knee surgery in 2009 is still a bit shaky but chances are that he will continue to dominate the rest of the season, and it is about time that he breaks his seven year duck at Sawgrass.
