The Players Championship: Travel

(Photo by David Cannon/Getty Images)Ponte Vedra Beach is one of the many playgrounds of the rich and famous on the Florida coast. It is a small, slumbering beach village situated only 18 miles southeast of Jacksonville in St Johns’ County, and its main claim to fame is that it is home to not only the Players Championship, but the PGA and ATP Tours as well!

Many professional golfers have made Ponte Vedra Beach their home, and it is quite interesting to see how many of these golfers have won the Players Championship at some stage or another – definite home ground advantage, we’d say!

  • Fred Funk won the event in 2005
  • David Duval clinched the Players Championship in 1999
  • Mark McCumber was successful at Sawgrass in 1988
  • Vijay Singh is yet to win the title
  • Jim Furyk is still to claim a victory at TPC Sawgrass

Getting There

By Air – The easiest way to get to Ponte Vedra Beach is by way of Jacksonville, and for national and international travellers it is possibly easiest to fly in. Jacksonville is serviced by a single airport, the Jacksonville International airport, but overseas visitors will have to fly via one of the other bigger destinations in the States and catch a connecting flight to Jacksonville.

By Bus – Greyhound Bus Line offers an extensive national service throughout the United States, and the offices can be located at 10 North Pearl Street. For the latest fares and schedule take a look at their website.

Getting Around

Once in Jacksonville it is not that easy to get around. Public transport is limited to a minimal city bus service which ends before midnight and an elevated rail system in the downtown district. The size and low density of the city does not make walking an option. It is therefore advisable to hire a car, and there are several reputable car hire companies in Jacksonville.
